About The Workshop:

DETOX FLOW® YOGA: Purification for Optimal Health and Wellness

Each day we are exposed to toxins that affect our energy, health and vitality. Many of our ailments and diseases today, including fatigue, weight gain, high blood pressure and depression can be attributed to a poor diet, environmental stressors, lack of exercise as well as repressed emotions. In this workshop, we will explore how we can improve our physical heath, increase our vitality, decrease our susceptibility to illness and disease, balance our emotions and develop practical tools for managing stress.
  • Explore how making conscious and responsible choices- in all aspects of our lives- can help purify our body/mind.
  • Discuss the importance of proper nutrition, conscious consumerism and sustainability
  • Learn practical tools to identify toxins in your home, office and environment.
  • Understand the connection to the mind/body and how purification of thought and emotion is an essential aspect of gaining optimal health.
  • Practice 2 specific yoga sequences that will stimulate the productivity of the vital organs to create an environment for toxic release. These creative yoga sequences utilize three internal components for cleansing-abdominal compression, decompression and twists. These classes will include Sun Salutations A and B, detox standing sequences, inverted poses, breathing exercises and restoratives. This intensive is designed to assist us in examining our habits, encourage proactive involvement with personal health though choice and self-responsibility, and help provide suggestions on how to choose what is best for our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
*This workshop is intended for all levels, but will include challenging and advanced poses and sequences; experience with sun salute A and B is necessary. Beginners are encouraged to come and modify/simplify the practice. Also, it this workshop is intended to be taken as a whole. “To truly understand what it is to be in the light, you have to also understand what it is to be in the shadow. Because it is one thing to hold the light within myself, but how can I hold the space for another being when they are in their shadow and still love them? And not judge them? I am only going to judge them if I am still judging me.”

Sunday 10/25  -   2:45-5:30pm

James Boag is known for bringing the traditional, scriptural teachings of yoga to vivid life, in ways which elucidate their relevance and practical application in our lives today. His practice and teaching grow from their roots in the Shankaracaraya Vedic tradition and the school of Kashmir Shaivism. His classes are infused with the ‘ras’ or flavour of joy associated with the devotional practice of kirtan, and of the bliss which is seen as underlying
everything in the beautiful teachings of Shaivism.
He has been teaching yoga since 1993 and leading kirtan regularly since 2003 . In 2005, while he was teaching English at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand James began studying Sanskrit.

Since 2008, James has spent over half his time in Mysore, India where he is now working towards an M.A. in Sanskrit, while also leading kirtan and courses on the Bhagavad Gita and Yoga Sutras. These classes are attended by international students of many of Mysore’s renowned yoga asana teachers.

We hope that you will join us for this special event!

SCHEDULE DESCRIPTION

FRIDAY, September 23: Introductory Talk and Kirtan

7:00-9:00PM

Introductory ‘what is yoga?’ talk. During the first half of this session, James will introduce Indian Philosophy and Vedic world view: the purpose of life and how to realise it; yoga as the practical school of Indian philosophy that works with human nature to harness the miraculous gifts of our bodies, senses, minds and intellects for the good of the whole. The talk will also address how yogasana fits into the broader picture of yoga and introduce key principles (from Patanjali and Gita) that will be explored more deeply over the weekend. We will then sing together in the blissful practice of kirtan. FREE ENTRY

SATURDAY, September, 24: The Power of Love in the Context of Yoga

According to the teachings of yoga, our very essence is love, joy, infinite creative potential. So how do we realise this? This day’s classes will focus on how we can cultivate and harness the power of love in our yoga practice in order to experience greater happiness, efficiency and fulfilment in all aspects of our lives.

10:00am -1:00pm: Asana(postures) Focus Class

In the first part of the class, with reference to key teachings from the Yoga Sutras and Bhagavad Gita, James will talk about how we can infuse the power of love into our asana practice and then take it into all our activities. We will then explore this in a balanced and focused asana class that grows from consideration and application of the yamas and niyamas as they relate to our mat practice.

1:00-2:00PM: Karma Yoga/Yajna Lunch

Focus on recognition, gratitude and awareness. Yoga is about the whole of our lives, when we infuse it into our daily activities, they can be trans- formed in wonderful ways. In the third chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna explains in detail how to do this, by practicing karma yoga, and ‘yajna’: the action that nourishes. James will briefly explain this concept before we experience it in practice through the act of eating, transforming it into a nourishing exercise in mindfulness and a blissful festival of worship.

Optional: We will be walking across the street to have a lunch served with love and awareness by Café AbyssiniaLunch cost between $10-15 .

2:00-2:45PM: Break

2:45-5:30PM: (Practical Yoga Philosophy)

Talk and Meditation.

In this talk, James will focus further on karma yoga and the power of love. This will refer in particular to the Bhagavad Gita and will also use poetry to illustrate the power of the application of real love to our activities. We will then close the day with kirtan and meditation, dedicated to opening and to love.

SUNDAY, September, 25: Unveiling our inner light:

Just as the teachings of yoga describe our essence as love, another way it is described is as the pure, self-effulgent light of consciousness. Sunday’s classes will focus on light, including the symbolism of surya namaskara, how we overcome darkness, and how we can be the lamps which light humanity’s way to a golden new dawn.

10:00am-1:00pm: Focused Asana Exploration:

Opening to Light/The Symbolism of Surya Namaskara: opening to the one light of the universe, surrendering to our highest self. Creating light, space and freedom from the inside in our asana practice. Techniques to keep our practice full of light and liveliness.

1:00-2:00: Karma Yoga Lunch:

Focus on ‘Rasananda’. There are many techniques for the practice of karma yoga. Here we will practice ‘rasananda’, letting the sense organ of taste come to centre stage as a demonstration of how we work with our senses to nourish the whole.

Optional: we will heading down Magazine St.to a lunch buffet served with love and awareness by Nirvana.Lunch cost between $10-15.

2:00-2:45 break

2:45-5:30: Unveiling our inner light:

Talk and Meditation: The benefits and power of satsang, symbolism of Ramayana, how we can unveil our inner light and glory for the benefit of ourselves, our society and our planet.

You gain inner vitality to compensate for the adverse effects of stress so you can excel in life.  In this workshop, we’ll cover the basics of pranayama (breath work), mantras, and chakras, as well as the practice of kriyas (yoga sets) and meditations, to bring awareness and consciousness, not only to our yoga practice, but to our lives.  We’ll also discuss elements of yogic philosophy, lifestyle, and diet, and how to integrate the practice into our daily routine.  This class is suitable for all levels of experience.
